Los Angeles County Assessor Jeff Prang Simplifies Disaster Relief for Property Owners
Property owners affected by recent wildfires in Los Angeles County now have an easier way to access disaster relief. Los Angeles County Assessor Jeff Prang has introduced a new online Disaster Relief e-Form, allowing homeowners to conveniently file the Misfortune & Calamity (M&C) Claim online from any device, including smartphones.
This initiative is part of the Assessor’s broader commitment to modernizing services and improving accessibility. With an e-Service account, property owners can bypass traditional mail, phone calls, and in-person visits—although these options remain available—and instead access services instantly through their online account.
How the M&C Claim Program Helps Wildfire-Affected Homeowners
The Misfortune & Calamity Claim (M&C) Program offers property tax relief to homeowners impacted by wildfires and other disasters. By qualifying for reassessment at a reduced property value, affected homeowners can lower their tax burden during the recovery period.
Who Qualifies?
Property damage must exceed $10,000.
Claims must be filed within 12 months of the disaster.
Filing is straightforward: homeowners can visit the ADS-820 Misfortune & Calamity e-Form online, review required documents, complete the form, and submit it electronically.
Additional Support for Fire-Affected Property Owners
Property Tax Deferrals
Homeowners who do not pay property taxes through an impound account may qualify to defer payments while their M&C claim is under review. This deferral is managed in coordination with the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office. Those with impound accounts should reach out to their mortgage lenders to explore available assistance programs.
Registering Fire-Damaged Property
Assessor Jeff Prang encourages affected property owners to register for a personal e-Service account on the Assessor’s website. By doing so, they can keep their contact information updated and track the status of key submissions, such as Homeowners’ Exemption claims and Change of Mailing Address Requests. Without updated contact details, the Assessor’s Office can only rely on property mailing addresses—which may have been destroyed in the fire. Property owners can create an account under the “My Account” section of the Assessor’s website.
